Update on Potential Christian College Slip
In the post “A Cost of Apathy,” the Christian college of Heritage Christian University was discussed. In the post, a fundraiser for the college in which sponsorships as high as $25,000 were available and that featured former first lady Laura Bush was discussed. In the post, a call for a cancellation of financial support for the university was called for should they not cancel the event in light of her most recent comments in support of gay marriage and abortion legalization.
Since that time Heritage has taken the advertisement for the fundraiser off of the front page of their website and it is not to be found as of this posting on the website. Also, from very trusted sources and individuals close to the situation I have learned that Heritage seems to be moving toward what would amount to a proper response by a Christian institution. Let’s hope this is correct.
This entire incident has me wondering a great deal about the entire idea of “Christian” colleges. While I have given thought about this matter in the past, in my recent studies I am failing to find any Biblical backing for a church sending financial support to such institutions. More on this to come.

David,
HCU was blindsided by these recent comments from Bush. They booked her with the understanding that she did not feel this way on these issues.
Now they are waiting from an answer from her and her people. They need clarification. They are in a tight spot, not because they have done anything wrong, but because of Bush’s decision to make these statements at this time.
Tickets for this event are not purchased by churches, but by individuals. The support any congregations give to the school is for the funding of regular school activities that promote sound gospel teaching. I am confident that HCU is not going to allow this event to be anything but a positive fund raiser for the furtherance of the school.
The Lord’s church is independent of any school or institution other than itself. This is true on both the universal and local level. HCU is here only to enhance the work of the church and to support the growth of the gospel and the salvation of souls. HCU is a blessing to the church, but has no authority. She has influence, but the Bible will always stand as the power by which we can be saved or condemned.
At this time, they (HCU) need our support and prayers, as they have been put into a situation that they in no way bargained for or could ever want to have to deal with.
Thousands of dollars have been entrusted to them and spent on this benefit dinner already. We can only pray that there will be a resolution to this matter that will only help HCU. My hope is that Bush will take a Biblical stand on these issues that have recently gotten away from her. I don’t think at this juncture that it is upon HCU to immediately remove her from the program.
We need to have some patience with the college right now, because they have really been put in a place that will require prayer and sound decision making before this issue is completely resolved.
Blessings to you and to the readers of your blog.
Jeremiah

Thanks Jeremiah. I believe that the question at hand is should churches of Christ fund an organization who provides a platform for someone who publicly supports issues that are in opposition of scripture. I believe that most responsible, studied Christians know the answer and all of the trying to hide in the gray of a black and white issue makes the church look foolish. I too believe that HCU will do the right thing but in my estimation this is the fruit of a problem that has been going on for some time now. Thanks again for your perspective and your work for the Lord.

Jeremiah,
I sent a short note to HCU today.
Thanks for the word.
